COAL CITY, Ill. -- The strongest of Monday night’s tornadoes was in Coal City, Illinois.
It is classified as an EF3, and is the most powerful tornado to hit the Chicago area since an EF5 ripped though Plainfield in 1990.
Winds reached 160 miles per hour, leaving a path of destruction across the town.
Resident credit early warning for the fact that no one was killed and just a handful of people suffered minor injuries.
30 homes were destroyed in Coal City.
Utility crews are working to fully restore electricity to the area by this evening.
