CHICAGO — A famous landmark in Chicago is getting replaced: Navy Pier’s Ferris wheel will be swapped with a taller one.

Once completed, the new wheel should stand 196 feet tall, exceeding the current wheel’s height by 50 feet.

It will also feature temperature-controlled gondolas to accommodate passengers during the longer ride.

Construction starts on the project this fall and will be completed in time for Navy Pier’s 100th anniversary next year.

Neither the new, nor current wheel measure up to the height of the original Ferris wheel.

During the 1893 World’s Colombian Exposition in Chicago, the first Ferris wheel measured 264 feet.
