Death of 2-year-old girl ruled a homicide, police investigating
LAKE STATION, Ind. — Police are investigating the death of a two-year old girl from Lake Station.
A man and woman flagged down firefighters on Saturday morning and handed them the child.
According to police, Nieyely Lopez was wrapped in a blanket, cold and unresponsive.
Firefighters performed CPR while taking her to Methodist Hospitals Northlake Campus.
Lopez was pronounced dead at the hospital. Her death was ruled a homicide as a result of multiple blunt force trauma.
The girl’s mother and a man later arrived at the hospital asking about the toddler.
A firefighter recognized the man as one of the people who gave the toddler to firefighters.
The girl’s mother says the man is her boyfriend, and he was babysitting the toddler while she was at work.
The man is not the toddler’s father.
Police detained the 19-year-old man from Gary, and took him in for questioning, according to a police report.
