SALT LAKE CITY -- A 2-year-old Utah boy died after authorities say he was beaten by his own mother and her boyfriend because he had a "potty" problem in his pants.
"This has been the worst and most difficult day of my life." James Seiger, the boy’s father, told KUTV. "He was the best kid; he was funny, he was very smart."
The boy, JJ, died early Monday morning.
“We felt him take his last breath,” said Nicole Seiger, the boy’s aunt.
The boy died as result of being beaten, kicked, punched and dropped, KUTV reported, citing local police.
"It's just horrible," Layton Police Lt. Travis Lyman told the station.
The accused is JJ's own mother, 23-year-old Jasmine Bridgeman, and her boyfriend, 34-year-old Joshua Schoenenberger.
Police said the beatings had to do with potty training. According to jail documents. JJ soiled his diaper and the couple became furious, even taking the diaper off and smearing it in his face. Documents say Schoenenberger continued to beat him while Bridgeman went outside and smoked a cigarette.
“There are no words,” Nicole Seiger told KUTV. “There are no words what this baby went through and the pain he suffered."
Police said the couple brought JJ to the hospital and reported he had almost drowned in the bathtub. But police said it was clear that's not what happened: He had internal bleeding, bruising to his legs, groin, arms and head.
"It's just unfathomable that anyone could do this," said Wolfgang Sieger, JJ’s grandfather. The boy’s grandmother, Krista Seiger, told the station, “It's hard to find words."
Homicide charges are expected against the couple.
