More than 30 arrested in overnight standoff
CHICAGO – More than 30 people were taken into custody after an hours-long standoff with police in the Edgewater neighborhood Saturday morning.
Police said they took in 33 people after a barricade situation at 6300 N. Lakewood.
Of the 33 people taken into custody, 18 were adult females, one juvenile female and 14 adult males, according to police. Charges are pending.
SWAT teams were called to the scene of the barricade situation at about 1 a.m. after a gunman fired shots at police. Police said an officer curbed a car for a minor traffic violation at the address at 11:20pm. During the stop the officers were fired on by an unknown person. No one was struck.
Witnesses report hearing five or six shots.
Police evacuated people from the first floor of the building and taped off a three block stretch near the scene.
The standoff ended peacefully at about 6:30 Saturday morning.
