Air Force veteran fatally shot after witnessing car break-ins

MERRILLVILLE, Ind. -- An Air Force veteran was shot and killed after he witnessed men breaking into cars outside his apartment complex.

Cecil Pendleton Jr., 56, left for work at 5 a.m. Wednesday in Northwest Indiana.

Soon after, residents heard gunshots and saw several men running away.

Police say it appears Pendleton was trying to get away from the men.

He was shot in his work van, through the passenger window.

Pendleton was the father of three grown children, and was getting married next month.

The men broke into at least two cars before shooting Pendleton.

No arrests have been made, and the gun that was used has not been recovered.

The Northwest Indiana Major Crimes Taskforce is assisting with the investigation. You can report tips anonymously here:

My condolences to this mans family.
It’s really sad when you have people like him who still goes to work, up at the crack of dawn.
And you have some thugs who are commiting petty crimes that take his life.
I hope they catch them and give them the death penalty. After all what’s fair is fair.

Find them and hang them… for all to witness. It would send a message to others. Sorry, this stuff has to stop.
