ASHEVILLE, N.C. — A woman who was recently reported missing in Asheville, N.C., may have in fact disappeared from New Jersey back in 1994.

According to WLOS in Asheville, Renee LaManna, 56, was put on a missing persons alert last Monday.

WLOS reports LaManna was last seen hitchhiking near a truck stop in Haywood County, N.C.

However a family member told the station LaManna has been missing for more than 20 years.

I have spent 21 years looking for Renee. My parents died looking for Renee,” her sister, Margaret LaManna, told WLOS in a phone interview.

According to WLOS, the North Carolina Center for Missing Persons reports LaManna disappeared in 1994 from her sister’s home in Ocean City, New Jersey. She was 35 at the time.

Her family said she may be hitchhiking to Florida, WLOS reported.

The alert issued for LaManna last week was dubbed a Silver Alert, often used for people with dementia or other mental disabilities.

According to WLOS, The North Carolina Center for Missing Persons says LaManna suffers from dissociative fugue disorder, which causes episodes of amnesia and could have caused the woman to forget her name and how long she had been away from home.

WLOS reports LaManna has been spotted several times in North Carolina, including by a police officer who gave her a ride without knowing she was missing.
