CHICAGO -- A nasty combination of fluffy snow, wind gusts up to 45mph, and temperatures 20-25 degrees below freezing is causing a messy commute Thursday evening.
Blowing and drifting snow will be an issue, especially in open and rural areas. Salt and other ice/snow melting products are not nearly as efficient at 10F as they are at 30F degrees.
A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued by the National Weather Service for most of the Chicago area until at least 3:00 a.m. Friday.
Snowfall totals are expected to be in the 1 to 3 inch range, with locally higher accumulations possible.
Thursday night's commute times may double for some Chicagoans if snowfall peaks during the evening rush. Motorists are urged to use extreme caution and allow for plenty of extra time to reach your destination.
