A large fire has gutted a home in the Northwest suburbs.

The fire started around 5:30 a.m. Wednesday at 7910 W. Gunnison, near Canfield.

According to the Norridge Fire Dept. Commander, there were calls of people trapped in the house, some reportedly hanging from the second-story window.

Eight people, adults and children, were rescued from the burning home. They were taken to Resurrection and Lutheran General with smoke inhalation.

Two Norridge officers were hurt, one with a possible knee injury.

Fourteen fire departments were on the scene.

Firefighters were hampered by freezing temperatures and frozen hydrants.

There is an apartment building behind the home, but the fire did not spread to it.

Officials say what's left of the house will have to be demolished because of fears of collapse.

No word on the cause of the fire.
