Tuesday night marks the beginning of Hanukkah, the Jewish Festival of Lights.

Chicago is celebrating 40 years since the lighting of the first public menorah in 1974. The largest menorah in the state of Illinois will be lit Tuesday at the Daley Center at 5:15 p.m.

More than 100 public menorahs will be lit around the state.

Vice President Joe Biden will be on hand in Washington Tuesday night to help light the national menorah. It will be the 35th anniversary of the first lighting of the national menorah at the White House.

The eight-day holiday commemorates the re-dedication of the temple in Jerusalem centuries ago. One candle is lit each night as a symbol of religious liberty and freedom for members of the Jewish faith.

He cited social media and the sitcom “Will and Grace,” giving Jews a large part of the credit for both.

“I bet you 85 percent of those changes, whether it’s in Hollywood or social media are a consequence of Jewish leaders in the industry,” he said. “The influence is immense, the influence is immense…”
