Outgoing U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel is in Afghanistan.
He arrived in Kabul overnight Saturday, in what will likely be his final visit to the country as Pentagon chief.
Hagel's unannounced trip comes near the end of the bloodiest year in Afghanistan, since the war against the Taliban began in 2001.
Hagel told reporters on the plane with him, he is confident that Afghanistan will prevail against the militants.
During his visit, Hagel will meet with Afghan President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani and Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah.
Yesterday, President Obama nominated Ashton Carter to replace Hagel who resigned last week.
