The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety is out with its latest report on booster seat safety, and it says a record number of new models are earning its top safety rating.

It tested 41 new booster seat models and 27 got the top ranking. Those top bets can be affordable to, ranging in price from $25-370. See the full list below.

There were, however, three models that fell short and are not recommended:

  • Diono Olympia (highback)
  • Diono Pacifica (highback)
  • Kids Embrace Batman No Back Booster (backless)

Researchers say the most important thing to remember when picking a booster seat is belt fit.

"The most important thing is that the booster seat do a good job positioning the belts, and that means that the lap belt lie flat across the upper thighs and the shoulder belt sit snugly in the center of the shoulder, and that will provide the best protection in a crash," said IIHS senior research scientist Jessica Jermakian

Research shows that children ages 4-8 who are in booster seats are 45 percent less likely to sustain injuries in a crash than kids restrained by belts alone.
