3 Gurnee high schoolers facing charges in cyberbullying, sexting incident

Three freshman boys at a Gurnee high school are charged with felony distribution of child pornography after an investigation into sexting and cyberbullying involving a female classmate.

The boys have been released to the custody of their parents.

Gurnee police got involved October 24 after the girl complained that classmates were making inappropriate contacts through their cell phones.

They say the investigation continues, the three already charged are not the only ones involved, and more charges are likely in the coming days.

The dangers of sexting and bullying have been discussed among administrators, parents and students at Warren High School, where people we spoke to described the boys as good kids who made a foolish mistake.

If convicted, they may have to register as sex offenders.

This is ludicrous and it’s happening more and more which is a former of bullying by the way. Gurnee needs to make this count so it’s not repeated. The school is full of crap if they think this is a “student matter”. It became more than that when they used public media. Schools need to get with the program or they will never reverse this terrible trend. Parents and teachers need to be what their title implies , and Government needs to let them do so. All this “their only children crap” allowed schools to become like war zones and def not the learning places they should be or were meant to be. All those rule handbooks are full of rules that are not enforced, so why should tax payers have to pay taxes. Just send the kids to a military academy , get them ready and ship them out in middle school. Maybe the kids will get together and learn what it means to “get along” and have respect for each other. Because schools no longer teach them anyway. They are too busy teaching drills on lock downs and disciplining kids whose parents do not! School has become a circus! Kids at this age should and do know better!!! Stop treating theme like 6 year olds.

The school says it’s a “student matter”, because that’s what it is and as such the school is prohibited from discussing the matter. It does not mean that because it’s students involved “nothing” should be done, or it should be condoned. PoPo and the courts is involved and apparently made some arrests of minors, which they can’t disclose either…but it’s all about disclosure, not enforcement. It’s being enforced.

Hi Dick…it is Dick isn’t it? Stop calling them PoPo.
Uh oh…15 year olds with iPhone 6’s with unlimited data in their pockets. Wouldn’t parents be responsibie if they subscribed their kids to a monthly porno magazine that came to the house each month? This is really no different. Children with the WWW of porno in their pockets and now everyone is so surprised they’re using it.

It’s Mr. Beninya to you stu pidasso! It is dry pidasso ain’t it? Kids got into trouble before smart phones, they’ll get into trouble after smart phones have gone the way of the buggy whip. People that like to be stu pidasso ‘s will be stu pidasso’s with or without the smart phone, assault rifle, hand gun, whatever.

  • WTF Warren?

While I realize that these are minors and is a criminal investiaation.
Speeking from experience dealing with WTHS, it is a disturbing matter when you have a school district who takes the stance of “it’s a police matter”.
People need to know this district is a very big HS district.
These deans, superintendents get paid a good $. I will not get into personal details but lets just say that my personal experience dealing with “the school authority” have jurisdiction in school matters could use some accountability.
Warren is a very good school district and even with the last referendum which was approved for the O’Plaine school expansion as well as the teachers pay increase a couple years back (of which a new contract is going to be getting closer).
Their supervising and/or seniority leadership is lacking and has been in place for a very long time school(s) level.
A fresh minded serious look should be given either to switch those in their positions to other campuses or bring in new faces.

What about all the colleges and universities that hide sexual assault you find it strange high schools do it too. More rapes happen at these schools than on the street.

Their supervising and/or seniority school leadership in my eyes are lacking and have been in place for a very long time. Guessing the average is 10+ years or so at Dean level or higher) in both the high school campuses.
A fresh open minded serious look should be given either to switch those in their positions to other campuses or bring in new faces . I firmly beleive that the school administrators are either overloaded or are at the status pro quo in their positions.
I truly hope this girl gets the support from the school district that she deserves and the boy’s that are alleged to have done this receive a fair and unbias review.
As far as the boys parents are concerned, I believe there should be accountability on their part as well, after all they are minors and somebody has a contract or responsibility with the cellular provider?
