The nephew of a well-known community activist was shot along with another teenager Thursday afternoon just off the Dan Ryan.

Shots rang out just before 5 p.m. near 67th and the Dan Ryan in the Englewood neighborhood.

Police say a 16-year-old boy and 15-year-old girl were hit multiple times.  They both are expected to survive.

The suspect or suspects fled.

Community activist Andrew Holmes got to the scene shortly after the shooting to fine the 16-year-old hit was his nephew Marquis Stewart.

Anyone who covers crime in this city knows Andrew Holmes. He arrives at crime scenes shortly after they happen and is always working to comfort the victims’ family and search for the suspects involved.

It’s his family that needs comforting. He says he’s working  to get to the bottom of what happened.

“This may have stemmed from an altercation at Dunbar High School,” he said.

Police don’t have a description of the suspects just yet, but part of their investigation may have something to do with a bucket found a few blocks from the seen. A jacket was found inside and a witness says she saw two young men drop it for no apparent reason.

Holmes is hoping the location of the shooting may provide clues as to who pulled the trigger.

“Hopefully all the video surveillance cameras along the expressway and the CPD cameras and business cameras got good footage,” he said.

Sources tell WGN that Holmes nephew is a document gang member. Holmes says if he is he had no idea.
