How To: Reduce your Risk of Stroke

Jane teamed up with Dr. Takhtehchian to find out how you can reduce your risk of a stroke. It’s easier than you might think!

  1. Keep your Blood Pressure Normal: People with a blood pressure less than 120/80 have half the risk of stroke than those with high blood pressure. A great way to keep this down is …
  2. Exercise: In a study of more than 47,000 men and women in Finland, moderate and high levels of physical activity were associated with lower stroke risk. Exercise helps reduce blood pressure by making the heart stronger. It also decreases the risk of diabetes and high cholesterol. Dr. Takhtehchian recommends 150 minutes of aerobic exercise a week. Grab a friend and hit the lake front path.
  3. Drink Moderately: Having more than two drinks a day is associate with a deadly type of brain bleed. While two glasses of red wine a week certainly has it’s benefits, try to drink no more than that.
  4. Eat a Healthy Diet: Diets high in saturated fat and cholesterol can raise blood-cholesterol levels and increase your risk of a stroke. Aim for 5-6 servings of fruits and vegetables and make sure you’re eating enough leafy greens. The folic acid in them will reduce your risk even more.
  5. Stop Smoking: You’ve heard it before and you’ll hear it again. Your risk of a stroke decreases significantly two years after quitting and within three years, your risk goes down to that of someone who’s never smoked before.
