Immigration activists in Chicago held a protest today after President Obama put off immigration reform.
President Obama had campaigned on immigration reform, but last week, he changed his mind on using an executive order to enact reform. He surprised many in the Latino community who had hoped the changes were on the way. Democrats say President Obama worried that if he enacted reforms, some Southern Democrats could lose in the November election. So he played it safe.
Politicians like Luis Gutierrez who support immigrants’ rights find themselves between a rock and a hard place – wanting, on one hand to punish the President and the Democratic party, but realizing, on the other, that they themselves are Democrats. So they’ve come up with an alternative strategy.”
“We need to remember to use our anger and our disillusionment and disappointment in a very constructive manner,” Gutierrez said.
That manner said Gutiérrez will be to vote for candidates that have the interests of Latinos in mind. Even undocumented Chicagoans are thinking carefully about their voting power.
