Senator Mark Kirk was in North Chicago tonight at the James Lovell Federal Health Care Center, with astronaut James Lovell himself. They spoke at a town hall meeting for people who rely on the VA.
Lovell is best known as the American hero who commanded the Apollo 13 mission. But these days, he'd prefer to be known for helping the nation's veterans get the kind of medical care they deserve.
Senator Kirk wanted to hear from veterans first-hand at tonight’s meeting. He also re-stated his strong position on American action against the Islamic state, after the videotaped beheading of a second us citizen. Earlier this week, Kirk was quoted as saying "I think we should bomb the hell out of ISIS. For every time they behead an American, the President should add a new squadron. We should have a policy of for every scalp, you get a squadron."
The senator promises what he recently called a toxic culture of corruption at veterans affairs is changing fast.
And the veterans he heard from tonight say they'll be watching.
