Fighting in Syria has claimed the first American-born jihadi for the terrorist group ISIS.
33-year-old Douglas McCain was born Chicago and grew up in the Robert Taylor Homes on the South Side; his family moved to Minnesota where he dropped out of high school and then moved to San Diego.
McCain was killed over the weekend in an attack by U.S.-backed rebels in northern Syria. Two other ISIS fighters were killed alongside McCain in the same attack. Rebels searching his clothes found his American passport and about $800 in cash.
McCain had several run-ins with the law for misdemeanors while in Minnesota. He converted to Islam about ten years ago and shared his religious opinions often on his social media accounts; but it is not known yet how he was recruited by ISIS, or exactly how he wound up in Syria.
Relatives say they hadn't heard from him in months and didn't know about his ties to ISIS.
About a hundred Americans are believed to be among the 23,000 extremists fighting in Syria.
