Police are investigating the accidental shooting of a 3-year-old boy inside a home in the West Garfield Park neighborhood.
Relatives identify the boy as James Jenkins, Jr. They say he was shot in the head at about 7:30pm Friday night in a home in the 4300 block of W. Monroe Street.
They say he was playing in a closet and may have been with another child and one of them found the gun and accidentally fired it.
Family members say at the time of the shooting, Jenkins was home with his mother, father and three brothers. The father reportedly took the gun and shell casings and ran from the home.
Annette Garvin, the boy's aunt, gathered with Jenkins' grandmother and other relatives outside Mt. Sinai hospital Friday night and called on the father to turn himself in to police.
Ardell Strong, Jenkin's great-uncle, says they were unaware of any guns in the home. He says the family was against the children playing with guns and they never even bought toy guns for them.
Jenkins was taken to Mt. Sinai in critical condition. He was being treating in the intensive care unit.
