CHICAGO, August 19, 2014 – Starting September 8, WGN Evening News expands to include an hour from 4-5pm, running from 4-6pm in total. Anchors Mark Suppelsa and Micah Materre will anchor WGN Evening News in addition to their WGN News at Nine duties. Tom Skilling, WGN-TV Chief Meteorologist, will also join the 4-6pm Evening News. In addition, traffic reporter Sarah Jindra will join WGN Evening News in order to cover traffic as well as LIVE& BREAKING NEWS via Skycam 9.
“The way people consume news has changed and breaking news is becoming more important to our viewers. WGN News, as Chicago’s Very Own, will continue to be there LIVE when news happens. By expanding our evening news we will better serve our viewers,” commented Jennifer Lyons, news director.
As of September 8, WGN anchor Lourdes Duarte shifts to the highly successful WGN Morning News to anchor alongside Dan Ponce from 4-6am. This will allow traffic reporter Erin McElroy to focus on more breaking news and traffic for WGN Morning News.
As of the fall of 2014, WGN News will program 61 hours of news on WGN-TV as well as newscasts for most of the broadcast day on CLTV. On July 12, 2014, WGN News launched a weekend newscast from 5-6pm. Starting September 8, WGN Evening News will expand another hour to run from 4-6pm
