Chicago woman killed on I-65 in Indiana

Chicago woman was killed and three others were injured Friday night in a two-vehicle accident on Interstate 65 near Crown Point, Ind., said police.

About 10:17 p.m., a 2005 Hyundai with a flat tire had stopped on the shoulder of the road on northbound I-65 near mile marker 248.4. The driver activated the hazard lights and tried to call for assistance, said Indiana State police.

As the driver was making the call, a 1994 Volvo semi-truck was unable to stop and ran over the top of the Hyundai, said police.

A front seat passenger in the Hyundai, Jacqueline Brown, 53, of Chicago, was pronounced dead at the scene. Another passenger of the car, a 30-year-old woman from Gary, was taken to Southlake Methodist Hospital in Merrillville. Police said she may have suffered a broken femur and a concussion.

The driver of the Hyundai, also 30, was taken to St. Anthony’s Hospital in Crown Point with possible broken ribs, said police. The driver of the semi, 26, of Wisconsin, complained of pain and was also taken to St. Anthony’s where he was given a toxicology test, said police

Northbound I-65 was closed overnight for about four hours for cleanup and reconstruction of the accident. As of 10 a.m. Saturday, no citations have been written and the crash is still under investigation, said police.
