Fans of Chicago’s little league team in the hunt for a World Series title gathered in Chicago Thursday to cheer on Jackie Robinson West to victory in the first game.
The game ended in the 5th inning, 12-2 as the team from Chicago beat a team from Washington State.
The city built a watch party for today’s game at 107th and Aberdeen hundreds filled the the team’s home field to cheer on the boys playing in Pennsylvania.
The hype on the South Side has been building all season long as locals kept their eyes on what is now the all-star team from Jackie Robinson West. When they clinched the title and made it to the Little League World Series, the mayor called for the watch party and got the Cubs and White Sox to help underwrite the event.
Dicks Sporting Goods even helped raise thousands of dollars by selling these t-shirts for $20 a pop. 100% of the net proceeds goes to the little league team to help them with costs during post season play. Hundreds of t-shirts sold out two days in a row.
The field and the team with a long history of successful baseball filled the hearts and minds of young and old on the South Side.
It is a double elimination tournament. The team’s next game is Sunday.
