On this day in 1987, the Cubs honored new Hall of Famer Billy Williams by retiring his number 26. It was the second number retired by the team after Ernie Banks number 14.  Billy was in uniform for the pre game ceremony and was gracious as always when he came to the microphone:

“I thought the climax was when I went to Cooperstown and was inducted into the Hall of Fame. It’s nothing like being with you fans. This pays one of the greatest honors when your number is retired and put up on the flagpole. And of course I think all of this recognition would have been impossible, if I hadn’t played here among some of the greatest fans in the world.”
