Woman walking dog hit by falling tree in Wilmette

A woman was injured by a falling tree in Wilmette

The woman was walking her dog Monday morning near 5th and Greenleaf when a 65-foot tree fell and trapped her between the branches.

She was taken by ambulance to the hospital. She had minor injuries but was under evaluation.

A fireman on the scene said the tree had been decaying.

The recent rain may have loosened its roots further.

The newsman and story mention that the tree had loosened roots. The picture shows clearly that the roots weren’t involved. That tree has been “decaying” for many years. It is a crappy silver maple, and these trees are notorious for being “widow makers”. Property owners need to be held accountable for managing the health of their very large trees, much as if they allow any dangerous situation to persist on their property. If you have a very large, old tree, especially of certain species, you need to monitor the health of that tree and take care of it and/or have it removed. There is no excuse otherwise.

PS: Why doesn’t the reporter note and acknowledge there are intact tree roots? At a minimum he shouldn’t have parroted that information. That’s journalistic integrity for you …. talking heads.
