Major gang leader arrested in West Side drug bust

An early morning drug bust on the Chicago’s West Side netted at least 30 gang members, including one high ranking member of the gangster disciples.
55-year-old Johnny Herndon is the alleged leader of just one faction of the Gangster Disciples, a dangerous faction that allegedly used guns and violence to protect its multi-million dollar empire.
federal and local authorities say 35 members of the faction were selling heroin and crack in a two block area in West Garfield Park. Two particular corners in the 300 block of South Kilbourn and in the 4400 block of West Congress were involved. Both have easy access to the Eisenhower Expressway where there’s no shortage of customers.  16 guns were confiscated as well as hundreds of grams of heroin, crack and powder cocaine.

The Chicago crime commission estimates there are 35,000 gangster disciples in Chicago.  Will arresting 35 make a difference?  Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy says it’s not about filling up the jails but getting the right criminals at the right time and then taking back the neighborhood.
“Now our plan is to hold onto that territory, break the cycle of demand and clean it up,” McCarthy said. “And slowly but surely back out.”
