Americans take a stand against violence Tuesday night when they participate in National Night Out.

To celebrate, people come out of their homes to promote safe neighborhoods. Police use the occasion to publicize programs such as neighborhood watch, drug prevention and other crime-fighting efforts.

The annual observance is held on the first Tuesday of August.

Events will be held in Chicago and throughout the suburbs.
