Suspected drunk driver injuries Indiana trooper in crash

A suspected drunk driver injured an Indiana state trooper on I-80.

It happened just before 1:30 a.m. Saturday at the Calumet Avenue overpass near Hammond.

Police say the trooper was standing next to his marked squad car on the inner shoulder of the eastbound lanes using a radar gun when a Jeep slammed into his car. The hit knocked the trooper into a concrete barrier wall.

His injuries are not life-threatening.

Police say the car’s driver, Norris Benbow, is in custody after trying to run away. Police charged Benbow with drunk driving, leaving the scene of a crash and driving on a suspended license.
