Runners get down and dirty at Mud Run

About 200 participants got down and dirty in Lake Villa on Saturday as part of the second annual Mud Run in the community. But it was all for a clean cause: raising money for local schools.

It’s not the most conventional way to run a race. Instead of a flat surface, there is rugged terrain, obstacles and, of course, mud.

“It’s a good summer event,” race director Patrick Gallagher said. “And mud runs were really popular, so it just seemed like a fun thing to do.”

Participants in the second annual 5-kilometer run ranged from the young to the young at heart.

“I’ve never done anything like this, so it will be very amusing,” runner Lisa Kozanecki said.

There was plenty of mud-slinging, but they were all there to raise money for scholarships for students in Lake Villa and Lindenhurst.

After winding their way over a few rivers and through the woods, mud smiles were everywhere.

When it was over, runners were treated to a giant foam waterslide ride to clean it all off.

“Absolutely worth taking time to get up early this morning to do it,” Kozanecki said.
