Republican candidate for Governor Bruce Rauner is responding to criticism about a million dollar check he gave to a South Side credit union.
His comments came during a "Project Hood" rally against violence on the South Side.
Earlier this week Rauner pledged to invest a million dollars in the credit union in an effort to help small businesses.
But some accused him of trying to buy the African-American vote. Rauner says that's not true
"I'm making an investment in a small business that specializes in making micro-loans to African American businesses," Rauner said. "That's a great way to make a good business investment and help improve the quality of life in these communities that are under-served."
Rauner says unlike a gift, he expects a return on his investment.
