A single mom in Michigan won the mega millions jackpot on what is traditionally considered to be the unluckiest day of the year.
Twenty-four-year-old Kelsey Zachow bought the lottery ticket on Friday the 13th and said she didn’t even realize she’d won until eleven days later when a store clerk told her.
Zachow said at first she didn’t believe him and decided to double check the numbers on MichiganLottery.com.
She said she could barely breathe when she figured out her ticket did in fact match the winning numbers for the $66 million jackpot.
The mom of two said the first call she made was to her aunt.
“”I went ‘I won! I won! the Mega Millions!'” she said. “She was crying, I was crying (and) hyperventilating.”
Zachow said after that, she raced home to tell her boyfriend of 3 years, who’s been unemployed for nearly a year.
“I mean we were jumping up and down. He called his family, it’s a lot. It was a lot.”
Zachow had been working two jobs, one as a medical assistant and the other as a bartender to help pay the bills and support their 7-month-old son and 5-year-old daughter.
She decided to get a one-time lump sum and will take home nearly $27 million after taxes.
While she dreams of a European vacation, cars and a big house, Zachow said she’ll first set up savings funds for the couple’s children, as well as her 2-year-old brother.
She also said she’ll probably quit both of her jobs.
Zachow’s spent about $10,000 on lotto tickets in the last five years.
Her big hit was the largest ever won by a Michigan resident playing on Friday the 13th.
