A Hawthorn Woods couple says they’re glad to be alive after a man randomly fired shots at their car while driving in northern Wisconsin on Thursday afternoon.
Larry Peters, who was in the car, called 911 and described what was happening.
“This guy’s nuts,” he told the 911 operator. “He’s just passing everybody. I think he’s trying to catch me for whatever reason.”
He and his wife were driving through Marinette County heading to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. A man firing shots hit their vehicle at least twice.
The Peters did not know the shooter, identified as Robb DeGroot, 43, of Green Bay.
Police caught up with DeGroot on the highway, and he shot at the officers during a 35-mile chase before he eventually turned onto a back road. Police say by the time sheriff’s deputies caught up with him, he had shot and killed himself.
Police say he also had a scoped rifle and more ammunition.
