Brooklyn Bridge seems to surrender in flag-swapping mystery

Police are investigating who might have replaced the two U.S. flags from the top of the Brooklyn Bridge with white flags, a symbol for surrender.

One flag appears to show faint stars and stripes, according to PIX11.

Authorities are taking this stunt seriously, and they are not pleased. “If flying a white flag atop the Brooklyn Bridge is someone’s idea of a joke, I’m not laughing,” Brooklyn borough president Eric Adams said in a statement.

Adams said the flag switch puts public safety at risk, especially at city landmarks. The bridge is one of the most heavily secured landmarks in the city, but the suspect still managed to get by and possibly even evade the surveillance cameras.

Police do not know what time the flags were put up, but officers removed them by 11:30 a.m. Tuesday.

A parody Twitter account, @BicycleLobby, made light of the situation by suggesting pedestrian traffic as a motive: “Earlier today we hoisted two white flags to signal our complete surrender of the Brooklyn Bridge bicycle path to pedestrians.”
