During these days when most communicate by e-mail, it could be considered a rare sight to see someone delivering letters by hand – especially if that person is on a boat.

But that’s how residents on Geneva Lake in Lake Geneva get their mail.

Elaine Kanelos was the first girl to make the jump off the mail boat.

Before 1974 and Elaine, it was boys only delivering the mail. It was a tradition going back to the early 1900s.

Elaine has now published a book about the time that she calls part memoir and part history of the lake and the area.

WGN’s Sean Lewis has the story.
