HIV returns to “cured” Mississippi child
A young Mississippi girl, thought to be the first child cured of the HIV virus, is infected with the disease after all.
The child was born prematurely to a mother infected with the virus.
She underwent aggressive drug therapy hours after her birth, and continued being treated until she was 18 months old.
She seemed to be cured of HIV following treatments.
However, doctors recently detected HIV levels in the 3-year-old during a routine visit.
They say the virus has been dormant for almost two years.
Doctors are now giving her anti-retro viral medications again.
She is responding well to them, and may have to be treated for the rest of her life.
