Indiana’s governor met with the family of a Gary police officer killed in the line of duty Sunday.
The fiancé of Officer Westerfield and her two daughters arrived at Gary police headquarters this afternoon, along with the fallen officers four daughters and ex-wife, to receive words of comfort and condolence from Indiana Governor Mike Pence.
Gov Pence and the family met for about 40 minutes. He says they shared stories about the 19 year Gary police veteran and Operation Desert Storm veteran who was killed in the line of duty.
Officer Westerfield was found fatally shot in his police car on the 2600 block of Van Buren Street before dawn on Sunday morning.
On Sunday night, three men were taken into custody just a few blocks away from the scene of the shooting.
Gary Mayor Karen Wilson-Freeman says two of those persons of interest have been released, but investigators believe they have the shooter behind bars.
Police believe the person of interest in custody fired shots in a domestic dispute Officer Westerfield has responded to and in the killing of the officer.
