A growing number of electric customers in Illinois are filing complaints with the government because their bill skyrockets with no warning. Turns out many are being signed up for service by third party suppliers who aren`t doing a good job educating their customers.
Third party energy suppliers are signing people up for deals without making sure the customer knows what he or she is signing up for.
David Kolata, executive director of the Citizens Utility Board, a consumer watch dog focused on energy, says, “We’ve had a lot of complaints from consumers who open up their bill and are paying 23-24 sometimes even 32 cents/kw hour”
In response, the Citizens Utility Board has filed a request to the Illinois Commerce Commission to investigate third party suppliers – to make sure there’s no misleading marketing and to make sure companies are fully disclosing terms and conditions.
