Funeral services were held today in Gary for two brothers who died last month in a water-filled pit in Hobart.

More than 200 people attended the funeral at New Hope Missionary Baptist Church where Bishop Norman Hairston urged those in attendance to celebrate life.

Donel Terrell Smith, 9, and Terrion DeSean Smith, 8, died together in the pit June 14 several blocks from their home.

Police said Terrion panicked as he went into deeper water, and his brother Donel jumped into the water to help him. Both struggled to get to safety and drowned.

Others at the pit tried to save the boys, but to no avail. A police recovery team dove about 20 feet to retrieve the brothers.
