PHOTOS: Sinkhole swallows 2 vehicles in Kane County

Two cars fell into an apparent sinkhole Monday night in rural Kane County.

According to the Kane County Sheriff’s Department, deputies responded to Thomas Road and McDonalds Road just before 4:00am.Upon arrival they discovered a Ford Taurus that had been driven into a part of the roadway that had been completely washed out. Prior to deputies’ arrival, a second vehicle, a Chevrolet pickup truck, had driven over the vehicle first vehicle.

Fire personnel had to extricate the two people form the Taurus. Both occupants of the Taurus were transported to Kishwaukee Hospital in Sycamore with apparent non-life threatening injuries. The driver of the pickup truck was treated and released at the scene, according to officials.

In a press release Kane County Sheriff’s Department stated:

“This is a rural area and there are no streetlights. It is unknown exactly why that section of roadway was washed out; however it appears to have been related to the overnight storms. The area is described as a sinkhole approximately 10 feet in diameter and deep enough that the Taurus was completely below ground level. Thomas Rd between Middleton Rd and McDonald Rd will be closed indefinitely due to the damage to the roadway. No tickets were issues as a result of this crash.”
