CPS announces layoffs of more than 1,000

Chicago Public Schools announced it will layoff over 1000 employees, including 550 teachers.
In a press release, CPS says the layoffs are due to “declining enrollment.”
The layoffs include 600 non-teaching positions, which officials described to the Chicago Tribune as “educational support personnel” that cover 60 job classifications including clerks, assistant teaching positions and an unspecified number of part-time security personnel.
In the press release, CPS said it “expects to have approximately 1,780 teaching positions vacant and available, which the District expects to fill prior to the beginning of the school year.”
“Of the 1,780 teaching vacancies, 1,420 are full-time slots. Any teachers who were impacted will be able to reapply in the CPS system.”
