Grant Park came alive Thursday as thousands of soccer fans gathered to watch the World Cup at the Petrillo Music Shell.
The United States faces Germany at 11:00 a.m.
But the city is cracking down on fans, not allowing any public alcohol consumptions. The city and the park district agreed to ban beer sales.
No drinking will be permitted on Metra trains going to the game, or returning from the game either.
A big 27-foot video screen is carrying the ESPN feed of the United States vs. Germany at the bandshell; a second screen, 12 feet wide, is posted about halfway across Butler Field, to give more people a chance to see the action.
Downtown employers can expect their 9-to-5 employees to be late getting back from lunch, because the game isn’t likely to end before 1:30pm.
The festivities in Grant Park will continue after the game, with a mini soccer tournament and activities for kids.
