Niles board to vote on controversial gun facility

A new gun shop, firing range, and training facility hopes to open its doors in suburban Niles. But the idea is sending shockwaves through some area schools. A critical vote among the village board is scheduled for tonight.

The Sportsman's Club hopes to open in a highly industrial area of suburban Niles on Howard.

But nestled in between the scores of warehouses are some schools.

One of the,, NewHope Academy, educates 65 kids between the ages of 11 and 21 go to school there 11 months of the year. The therapeutic school services kids with special needs. Niles West High School and a vocation school are also nearby.

The mayor of Niles says he is not in favor of bringing more guns to the village so he has asked the zoning board of appeals to provide more information about safety and proximity to schools. He wants more information before moving forward with any vote.
