Chicago chefs and doctors are joining some alderman in pushing for a ban on non-therapeutic use of antibiotics in livestock.

Backers of the measure say it will help consumers fend off serious infections.

They argue that rampant use of antibiotics in livestock contributes significantly to the spread of antibiotic resistant bacteria.

An estimated 23,000 Americans die each year from infections from these so-called “superbugs.”
