The National Weather Service has issued a dense fog advisory for Cook County that will remain in effect through 9 a.m. this morning.

Foggy conditions will reduce visibility to less than a quarter mile near Lake Michigan, according to the National Weather Service.

Officials urge drivers to reduce their speed, use headlights and leave extra room in front of their vehicles.

North central Illinois, Northeast Illinois and Northwest Indiana are also under a hazardous weather outlook. Thunderstorms are expected during rainy periods today, with “brief torrential downpours” possible, according to the weather service.

“Severe storms are not expected…although a few may have wind gusts in excess of 40 mph…namely along and east of Interstate 55,” according to the weather outlook.
