Alderman Ed Burke confirmed with WGN News that he has prostate cancer. The dean of the city council and the longest standing alderman in Chicago history plans to undergo surgery Thursday.
The feisty and often controversial 70-year-old has represented the 14th Ward on the southwest side since 1969. He did not have anything more to share about his health or plans for treatment. He might, however, be more likely to share more at an unrelated press conference tomorrow.
The former police officer turned lawyer and political powerhouse is arguably the most powerful alderman on the council right now. He is head of the finance committee and has been for years.
Burke is married to Illinois Supreme Court Justice Anne Burke. They have raised five children.
