A judge today denied bail for a driver prosecutors say was drunk when he drove through a construction site and killed a worker yesterday on Western Ave on the southwest side.

19-year-old Erick Lopez was charged with reckless homicide, aggravated DUI, misdemeanor DUI, having no car insurance and failure to carry or display a drivers license, according to court records.

Lopez was not in court because he and two other survivors of the crash remain hospitalized in serious to critical condition.

The worker who was killed has been identified as Jose Tafoya of Merrillville, Indiana.

Accoring to the state’s attorney, Lopez was driving at a high rate of speed, wove in and out of construction site barriers and then struck Tafoya before crashing into a paving machine that Tafoya was working behind. Tafoya was thrown several feet and landed on the sidewalk.
