The Illinois Department of Natural Resources and the Coast Guard were initially in a rescue mode, but that changed this afternoon when they moved into recovery mode, pulling the bodies of a man and a woman out of the Cal-Sag Channel near Palos Hills.
Earlier crews pulled out what is believed to be one of the boats involved in this accident. There is damage to the front of the vessel.
This collision happened at about 11 p.m. between a 19-foot boat with at least three people on board and a 66-foot boat, the UTV Bill Arnold, that had six cargo barges, according to the Coast Guard.
Officials have not yet released the names of the victims that were pulled from the water or the one person that is believed to be still missing.
“Every weekend he could get out on the boat, that’s what he wanted to do. And he wanted to have his friends with him,” says a friend of the victims.
The Illinois Department of Natural Resources says it believes there is still one person in the water who they were unable to recover. That recovery mission will begin again Sunday morning. In the meantime, it has set up a perimeter around the area where no boats are allowed to go down.
