MIAMI — The Chicago Cubs fulfilled their main goal Wednesday as Jake Arrieta struck out a career-high 11 in coasting to a 6-1 win at Miami.
With the win, the Cubs earned a 500 record on this 10-game trip. It also gave them two consecutive road series wins for the first time since taking two of three at Milwaukee and Seattle on June 25-30, 2013.
Arrieta, who missed the first month of the season because of right shoulder stiffness, lowered his ERA to 1.98.
Starlin Castro hit his second RBI double to snap a 1-1 tie, and Nate Schierholtz capped a four-run rally with a three-run home run off Marlins starter Nathan Eovaldi.
The Cubs took a 1-0 lead in the first when Chris Coghlan, celebrating his 29th birthday, hit a double and scored on a double by Castro down the third base line.
Pedro Strop and James Russell each pitched a scoreless inning.
The Cubs will take Thursday off before opening a 10-game homestand Friday against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
