Train derailment causes traffic delays in western suburb

A train derailment in Melrose Park this afternoon forces crews to shut down the high traffic Mannheim Road Bridge as a precaution – and as a result, created major traffic delays.

The incident happened around 2 p.m. according to a spokesperson from Union Pacific Railroad.

Three rail cars that haul vehicles derailed but are upright. One car leaned up against a support beam for Mannheim Road.

No injuries were reported.

As a precaution, Union Pacific Railroad notified IDOT and engineers came out to inspect the bridge.

The cause of the derailment is under investigation.
