What was billed as a potential traffic nightmare has been anything but as crews are way ahead of schedule and all inbound lanes are open on the Kennedy Expressway.
The Ohio Street off-ramp and the new Ontario Street on-ramp to the Kennedy are open, according to IDOT.
By Saturday evening, work crews were far ahead of schedule so much so that IDOT reopened the inbound lanes here at the Ontario Ohio bridge interchange shortly after 9 p.m.
IDOT has been warning motorists to stay off the Kennedy during the weekend construction period and it seems that many people heeded that warning. IDOT reported far fewer cars and trucks were on the road from Friday to Sunday morning and Metra, CTA and Pace all say ridership was up this weekend as well.
The overall length of the project has been reduced from three weekends to two weekends.
