Hundreds of people marched for peace on the South Side.
The march was held near St. Sabina Church Friday night.
This message was especially important to the families of shooting victims.
Later on, many took the time to read the names of the 105 children and young adults who were killed in chicago gun violence since September of 2013.
Political leaders said it’s time for residents to take charge of their communities.
“Every child in the city of Chicago deserves a childhood,” Mayor Rahm Emanuel said. “Too many children are growing up with the familiarity of gunshots and not the familiarity of laughter.”
The march is held every year on the last day of school for Chicago Public Schools students.
Organizers said they hope it sends a message.
